Pocket watch with hand-engraving and miniature painting on enamel.
An American steam locomotive, symbol of modern times, surges out of the back of this unique piece, which required some 240 hours of hand-engraving. The backdrop is in miniature painting on enamel.
The white enamel ground was scraped and then reworked with black enamel using a technique called grattage. Several coats of flux, or transparent enamel, protect the decoration, which underwent 10 firings. All details of the locomotive and the carriage are hand-engraved in the white gold, either in low relief or using line engraving. A hand- engraved railway-track motif, also in line engraving, adorns the border of the case back, the bezel and the bow. The dial, in white enamel, presents white-gold applied Breguet numerals and white-gold hands, the latter with a hand-engraved decoration. A black spinel cabochon (0.35 ct) adorns the crown.
This pocket watch is accompanied by a white-gold handcrafted stand on an oval-shaped black obsidian base set with a black spinel cabochon (0.41 ct).
It houses the caliber 17’’’ LEP PS manually wound movement with small seconds.
