Manual winding

Dome table clock in cloisonné enamel. Inspired by the roses adorning so many English porcelain tea services. To conjure the delicate outlines of petals and blush of flowers and leaves, the enameler used 22.9 m of 0.2 x 0.6 mm gold wire (weight 45.7 g) and transparent, opalescent, and semi-opaque enamels in 14 colors. Each enameled element required between 6 and 7 firings, at temperatures ranging from 800°C to 850°C. The black-enameled hour circle and dial center in enamel use several of the stylistic features of London’s famed Big Ben clock dial, most notably the traditional shape of the hands and the central multi-petal rose motif. Powered by a caliber 17’” PEND mechanical movement, rewound by an electric motor. Height: 213.5 mm. Unique piece created for the 2015 Watch Art Grand Exhibition in London. 2015.

The enameler

From the seventeenth century onwards, enamelers’ skills were much in demand to adorn watchcases and decorate dials. Today, it’s an endangered craft – but not at Patek Philippe.
