Self-winding

Calatrava wristwatch with cloisonné enamel dial.

A tropical plant in glowing colors graces the dial of this limited edition in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel.

Depicting the flame-like blooms of the “Strelitzias” or “birds of paradise”, required 72 cm of gold wire measuring 0.1 x 0.4 mm in cross-section, opaque, semi-opaque and transparent enamels in 24 colors, and 9 firings at temperatures ranging from 800°C to 820°C. The bezel and lugs are set with 113 brilliant-cut Top Wesselton Pure diamonds (~0.8 ct) and the buckle sparkles with 29 diamonds (~0.22 ct).

Housed in a rose-gold case, the caliber 240 ultra-thin self-winding movement may be admired through the sapphire-crystal back.

The enameler

From the seventeenth century onwards, enamelers’ skills were much in demand to adorn watchcases and decorate dials. Today, it’s an endangered craft – but not at Patek Philippe.
