Self-winding

Set of two Calatrava wristwatches with dials in cloisonné enamel.

To adorn the dials of this limited edition in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel, Patek Philippe chose the hummingbird, one of Nature’s most astonishing birds. It is depicted supping on nectar from a flower while performing its extraordinary feat of stationary hovering - remaining in one place in the air.

Creating the contours of the picture required, depending on the dial, from 35 to 65 cm of gold wire (~0.30 and ~0.60 g) measuring 0.1 x 0.4 mm in cross-section, which the enameler cut into tiny sections and worked into shape by hand. The myriad shades of the plumage and the petals called for a palette of transparent, opaque, semi-opaque and opalescent enamels in some 25 colors. Each dial underwent from 16 to 20 firings at temperatures ranging from 800°C to 840°C. The bezel and the lugs are set with 112 brilliant-cut Top Wesselton Pure diamonds (~0.8 ct) and the prong buckle sparkles with 29 diamonds (~0.22 ct).

The white-gold case houses the caliber 240 ultra-thin self-winding movement, which may be admired through the sapphire-crystal back.
