A Story of Independence

The Calatrava Cross

The Calatrava Cross has been the Patek Philippe emblem for more than one hundred years. Officially trademarked on April 27, 1887, it stands as a testament to our unwavering dedication to the highest standards of craftsmanship. The designation "Croix de Calatrava" not only serves as an identifier but also embodies our heritage.

An Evolving Trademark

The appearance of the Calatrava Cross has evolved over time. After its initial trademark in 1887, it went through a number of changes before taking on its present form.

Adrien Philippe’s Choice

While the origins of Philippe's adoption of the Calatrava Cross as a trademark remain enigmatic, he potentially drew from historical references. The four lilies are reminiscent of fleur-de-lis from the French royal arms, with three lilies adorning the coat of arms of Eure-et-Loir, Philippe's birthplace. This emblem of prestige and sovereignty quite possibly influenced the choice of a lily motif to symbolize the company's excellence.

Timeless Beauty

All of our timepieces bear the distinguished Calatrava Cross. Initially subtle, this symbol has gained prominence since the 1960s, adorning various external and internal elements of our watches. It represents our lifelong commitment to excellence, resonating with discerning enthusiasts worldwide. An enduring symbol of beauty, unaffected by trends, ideal for representing our values and long-term philosophy.

The Calatrava Collection

Since 1932, the name Calatrava has another meaning: it identifies one of our most emblematic collections, based on the minimalist Bauhaus principles – form follows function. It is the watch in our collection that best represents this adage. The Calatrava is the quintessential round wristwatch and has remained true to its original clarity, elegance and remarkable simplicity.

A Distinctive Sign

Since the 1980s, we have used the Calatrava Cross for communication purposes, particularly at our retail locations. It is a way to immerse visitors into our universe as soon as they come in contact with us, and serves as a valuable reminder of what we stand for.
