City of Milan

In tribute to the capital of Lombardy This limited edition of three pieces features as its decorative motif the city of Milan, characterized by its layout in concentric circles. At the center of the dial appears the golden silhouette of the Duomo, emblematic monument of the city, depicted in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel. The dial and the convex circular side panels were first decorated with a “barleycorn” pattern destined to remain visible beneath the translucent enamel. To outline the districts of the Lombard capital, the enameller laid down about 11 m of gold wire (~21.3 g). The subtle monochromes of blues, greens and turquoises that together form the city plan required a palette of 20 enamel colors, 19 of which were translucent, while opaque white enamel identified the main roads. Aligning the streets on the 2 rounded side panels and the dial was one of the major challenges posed by this piece. At the center of the clock emerge the Piazza del Duomo and the Gothic silhouette of the cathedral; the latter clad in gold according to the technique of paillonné enameling. Each enameled element required from 8 to 9 firings at temperatures ranging from 850°C to 900°C. Rhodium-plated “trapeze”-type hands adorn the dial. Four lozenge-shaped appliques set on the bezel indicate both the quarter-hours and the cardinal points. This piece is powered by the caliber 17’’’ PEND TABLE mechanical movement rewound by an electric motor.
