Divine poet
Drawing inspiration from the portrait of Dante Alighieri painted circa 1495 by Sandro Botticelli, this unique piece in white gold pays homage to the greatest Italian poet and his masterpiece: the “Divine Comedy”.
The enameller achieved this realistic recreation of Dante’s portrait using transparent and opaque enamels in 14 colors together with 6 colors of miniature painting on enamel. The poet’s silhouette stands out on a deep blue ground studded with stars worked in gold powder, in an architectural perspective framed by drawings of Botticelli’s inspired by the “Divine Comedy”. Several layers of flux, a transparent enamel, protect the decoration and intensify its colors according to the Geneva method. The enameling called for more than 25 firings at a temperature of 800°C.
The bow and the central band encircling the crown present hand-executed line engraving.
For the dial, in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel, the enameller laid down about 19 cm of gold wire (~0.1 g). He then introduced a palette of opaque and transparent enamels in 15 colors to render the subtle gradations in the tints of the laurel leaves. Stars worked in gold powder and leaf-shaped hands in white gold indicate the time. A blue enamel cabochon decorates the crown.
This pocket watch is delivered with a stand in white gold embellished with segments of rutilated quartz and set on a base of lapis pyrite. It also comes with a chain in white gold decorated with a medallion in blue enamel.
It houses the caliber 17’’’ LEP PS manually wound movement with small seconds.
