On the Rocks

A glass of whisky This limited edition of ten watches in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel pays tribute to single malt Scotch whisky, a typically Scottish spirit produced from malted barley and distilled twice in a pot still. The dial was first delicately hand-guilloched with a pattern of horizontal waves. The artisan enameller then devoted all his skill to creating the illusion of a tumbler filled with whisky. He outlined the rim of the glass, the level of the liquid and the contours of the cubes using about 12 cm of gold wire (~0.1 g). To accentuate the realism of the scene, he next gave a slight relief effect to the tumbler and the ice cubes. Using his masterly handling of nuances, he then succeeded in reproducing all the subtle amber tints of the alcohol, working with a palette of 12 enamel colors, mainly transparent and semi-transparent. The hand-engraving on the sapphire crystal perfected this splendid trompe-l’œil by achieving a true sense of a single malt on the rocks. Each dial required 11 firings at a temperature approaching 765°C. The yellow-gold case with an engraved back, featuring the thistle motif of the sapphire crystal, and bearing the inscription ‘Today’s rain is tomorrow’s whisky’, has harmonious proportions inspired by the ancient golden section. The hours and minutes are displayed by cheveu-style hands, stamped in yellow gold. This iconic watch houses a caliber 240 ultra-thin self-winding movement. The alligator leather strap, featuring a chestnut to brown gradient, is endowed with a prong buckle in yellow gold reflecting the elliptical shape of the case.
