The Old Man of Storr
This unique piece in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel highlights the clean, pure lines of the green countryside surrounding the Old Man of Storr, the rocky monolith dominating the Isle of Skye.
For the contours of the undulating plains, the overcast skies, the sea and the Old Man of Storr, the enameller used about 6.3 m of gold wire (~11.7 g). To render the contrasts and colors typical of this region of the North, with the mossy greens of its moorlands, the blue-black tones of the dark waters and all the nuances of grey in the clouds, he then worked with a palette of transparent, opalescent and opaque enamels in 32 colors. Finally, a purple tinted thistle in cloisonné enamel – Scotland’s national emblem, its color echoed by the transfer-printed Patek Philippe Genève logo – was added at the center of the dial to complete this homage to the former Caledonia. Each enameled plate underwent between 6 to 10 firings at temperatures of approximately 890°C.
An hour circle adorned with a striated border presents stylized Arabic numerals transfer-printed in moss green, and leaf-shaped hands embellished with rhodium plating.
