The musicians of Hell
This limited edition of two pieces in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel pays homage to Mexico and its renowned Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead, a joyful, colorful Christian feast day celebrating the dead every year on November 2.
The enameller drew on all his skills to render the unique atmosphere of this exuberant celebration. Tracing the complex outlines of each mariachi in his traditional costume and of the cempasúchil, the bright-orange marigolds that are an essential feature of the Dia de los Muertos, called for about 46.82 m of gold wire (~23.77 g). To render all the vivacity of the festival, the artisan then introduced a palette of transparent, opaque and semi-transparent enamels in 25 colors, together with 2 colors of miniature painting on enamel. Silver leaf embedded beneath translucent enamel, according to the technique of paillonné enameling, increases the luminosity of the decoration and truly brings the scene to life. Each enameled plate required some 14 firings at a temperature of 770°C.
An hour circle adorned with a rhodium-plated sunburst presents applied Arabic numerals, lacquered in 6 different colors, and leaf-shaped hands with a rhodium-plated finish.
This piece is powered by the caliber 17’’’ PEND mechanical movement rewound by an electric motor.
