A natural fantasy
This unique piece in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel pays tribute to the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi and marks, in 2026, the 100th anniversary of his death. More particularly, it celebrates his park, the most famous in Barcelona, created between 1900 and 1914.
To reproduce the world of shapes that nature inspired in Antoni Gaudi, the enameller had to draw on every aspect of his expertise. Reproducing the ceramic mosaics that clad the park’s sculptures and architectural features called for about 21.36 m of gold wire (~37.13 g). To reflect the richness of the original colors he worked with a palette of 69 shades of enamel, mainly transparent but with some opalescent or opaque. 5 colors of miniature painting on enamel brought out the fine details of this fantastic baroque garden, while 7 tints of a lustrous enamel lent a satin sheen to some of the motifs. Each enameled plate required from 7 to 9 firings at temperatures ranging from 890 to 910°C.
An hour circle in blue and white lacquer takes up the clock’s “mosaic” spirit. Lozenge-shaped hour markers in white lacquer and stylized hands in yellow gold embellished by the technique of plique-à-jour enameling indicate the time. The dial center in cloisonné enamel evokes, by its blue monochromes, the marquetry-work in faience that was so dear to the Catalan architect.
